Animals include the Balkan Shamois, Wolf and the Brown Bear. Most of the mountain is under protection within the Pirin National Park - an UNESCO World Heritage Site and a site of the European Ecological Network NATURA2000. Much of the area is forested, with one of the best conifer woods in Bulgaria, holding important populations of the Balkan endemic species Macedonian Pine, Bosnian Pine and Bulgarian Fir.
