A total of 15 bathing areas (12%) did not meet the mandatory values. About 73% of bathing areas complied with the mandatory quality values. According the the EU report on Bathing water quality 2007, most Bulgarian beaches meet the required standards of cleanliness. Be warned though, on the map it shows that several resorts around Varna do not meet the standards. Better not head to Golden Sands, then..."Coastal bathing waters There are only two European Union Member States located on the Black Sea: Bulgaria and Romania. Both are new Member States who began reporting the quality of their bathing waters in 2007. Compliance with the more stringent guide values stood at 56%, some 30% below the European average of 86%. Only one bathing site in Romania met the guide values compared to 76% of sites in Bulgaria. This figure is significantly lower than the European average of 95%. Within the region the difference is striking, with a compliance rate of 29% in Romania and 90% in Bulgaria.
