Vote On Oil Pipeline Fails - Bulgaria Town’S - Bulgaria
A referendum on February 17, in neighbouring Bourgas municipalitysaw 97% of residents vote against the project but turnout was less than 50 per cent and thevote failed. Lastweek the major Bulgarian opposition parties tabled a petition signed bythe required number of deputies to call a national referendum onthe construction of the pipeline.However community leaders have struggled to get the widerpopulation interested in the issue. Sozopol lies along the route of the planned Bourgas-Alexandroupolisoil pipeline which will deliver oil brought across the Black Sea from Russia to Bulgaria’sport of Bourgas. The Bourgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline has been heavilymarketed by Moscow as an alternative totransporting oil by ship from the Black Sea to the Mediterraneanalong the crowded Bosphoros Straits. Two other municipalities are considering whether to call areferendum on the dispute.
