A few steps to the east lies the ruined Old Metropolitan Church, dominating a plaza filled with pavement cafes, street traders and hawkers. Bar Burgas, Mena 10, is one of the better places to enjoy an evening drink. Completed during the fourteenth-century reign of Tsar Aleksandar, its blind niches, turquoise ceramic inlays and red-brick motifs are characteristic of latter-day Byzantine architecture, although the frieze of swastikas a symbol of the sun and continual change is unusual. Diagonally opposite is the now ruined Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, patterned not unlike the Pantokrator. Immediately beyond this is the first of Nesebars churches, the Church of Christ the Pantokrator. Just downhill from here theres the ruined Church of St John Aliturgetos, standing in splendid isolation beside the shore and representing the zenith of Byzantine architecture in Bulgaria. Mitropolitska towards the Church of Sveti Spas (Summer only: MonFri 9 am1.30 pm & 25.30 pm, Sat & Sun 9.30 am1.30 pm; $1), outwardly unremarkable but filled with seventeenth-century frescoes. Slightly downhill on ul Mitropolitska, St John the Baptist (now an art gallery) also has a cruciform plan, but its undressed stone exterior dates it as a tenth- or eleventh-century building.Overhung by half-timbered houses carved with sun-signs, fish and other symbols, str. The church itself dates back to the fifth or sixth century, and it was here that bishops officiated during the citys heyday. The old town is crammed with restaurants; the sea-facing Neptun, towards the far end of town, is reasonably reliable, while the Plakamo, just downhill from the New Metropolitan Church at Ivan Aleksandar 8, is family-run and relatively sheltered. Thereafter ownership alternated between Bulgaria and Byzantium until the Ottomans captured it in 1453. You should verify critical information (like visas, health and safety, customs and transportation) with the relevant authorities before you travel.

The numerous stores, restaurants, confectioneries and galleries allure with various temptations and exciting holiday spirit. The old Turkish bath from the 18th century has also been preserved. The romance of Nessebar can be found in areas near the fortress wall as well as in the house yards. They lend unforgettable charm and atmosphere to the town with their oriels with wooden decorations. Nessebar Bulgaria - Travel Guide, Tours, Hotels, Maps and Photos
About the resort: The present-day town is the successor of a Thracian fishermen''s settlement named Menabryia (meaning literally ''the town of Mena''), the foundation of which dates back to the 2nd century BC. In the 1st century BC the town surrendered to Marcus Lukulus'' legions and was subjected top Roman domination, during which the construction of a second colony of Messembria began and was finished. Its beach is considered to be one of the finest along the Black Sea coast due to a large sandy strip of land between the town and the village of Ravda, covered with clean golden sand. Later it remained the only Doric colony along the Black Sea coast, as the rest were typical Ionic settlements. Remains suggest the existence of aqueducts, a sewerage system, fortified wails, an amphitheatre and numerous cult edifices (including an impressive temple of Apollo) at that time. The Greeks named it Messembria (which was later transformed into Nessabar by the Slavs), and it grew into a big and well-fortified town-state. The town became a popular commercial centre as a variety of goods from the Aegean and the Mediterranean regions were traded there and it also minted its own coins in the 5th century BC. The town benefited from natural protection from both the land and the sea. The whole land between Nessebar and Obzor used to be a granary that supplied the two colonies with food as well as goods of exchange. Two centuries later, it founded its own colony called Navlohos near Obzor.

city since the 5th century BC and gold coins since the 3rd century BC.The town fell under Roman rule in 71 BC, yet continued to enjoy privileges such as the right to mint its own coinage. Its abundance of historic buildings prompted UNESCO to include Nesebar in its list of World Heritage Sites in 1983.As of September 2005 Nesebar has a population of 10,194[1] and the mayor is Nikolay Trifonov. Actually, Kirk and Mitch went to Austria for a couple days, but I decided to stay in Germany for various reasons. And in Ljubljana met for a drink my best friend Adi. Anyway, it was a short night, as packing was done into long night hours. At the end of September 1998 i was finishing my graduation thesis. But, I didn't want to go only to the beaches, i wanted to see the world. I had no more problems with jet lag the rest of the time in Europe. I remember Ann and I deciding to visit our friend, Ali, in Bochum and making preparations for the trip - getting passports and such. I think that I figured it out; the air feels so different because its not humid like it is in my hometown. I took the train from Salerno to Catania. I woke up this particular morning bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. My alarm started ringing at 4:30 am with the song L'ombelico del mondo - the belly of the world - loudly. Oh, but I thought the further south I got, the warmer it will be. Saw a couple World Heritage sites, a few castles and infinity cathedrals. So, i picked up Adi some 30 minutes later, just as he was just getting his hair cut (at 5am in the morning hehe)... The train ride to Cologne was so smooth, only took about an hour. We went to Cambridge, Ely, York, Warwick, Kentworth, Coventry, Bath, Amesbury, Salisbury & Portsmouth. While drinking beer and watching people going by, he explained his idea to go traveling to Zanzibar...

Air con, who needs air con when its 40 degress outside?? Eating out can prove expensive but then again if God had wanted us to cook in, why did he invent restaurants??? For our added comfort, we're also found that most rooms come with a hairy-arsed snorer who likes to sleep 12 hours a day & spread his most intimate undergarmets around the room to dry...and all this is kindly included in the price!! Do the calculations to determine if you are truly getting a good deal.7. Find Cheap Tickets to Eastern Europe - Book AheadIt may seem like a no-brainer, but booking your flight well ahead of time can garner the cheapest tickets. Find Cheap Tickets to Eastern Europe - Book for the Off-SeasonJune, July, and August are the three months at the height of the tourist season in Eastern Europe. Find Cheap Tickets to Eastern Europe - Choose Flights with Multiple StopsWhile flying non-stop relieves some of the stress of multiple layovers, non-stop services are, by nature, more expensive. Find Cheap Tickets to Eastern Europe - Consider DestinationYou may have your heart set on one destination, but tickets to another, nearby destination may be much cheaper. Find Cheap Tickets to Eastern Europe - Do Your ResearchEven before you're ready to make definite plans or purchase tickets, begin researching flight costs online. For example, choose to fly to Eastern Europe in early May, when the weather is beginning to warm up, but before the influx of visitors gives airlines a reason to hike ticket prices. If you plan on purchasing your tickets by a given date, keep a pen and paper handy so you can record your results and the search engine through which you found your results. If the euro goes to $1.60, you'll pay $90 more — an amount you can make up by substituting an expensive dinner with a meal in a local cafe, or by taking public transportation instead of taxis. If you did your budget estimates at the beginning of this year, when the rate was $1.47, a week in a 100-euro-a-night hotel will have cost $1,029. Most estimated the dollar will be at around $1.30 to the euro when they priced their 2008 tours. Obviously they were wrong, and a few have added currency surcharges to cover the increased costs. The U.S. This has always been the case, but it's more apparent to Americans now that the buying power of the U.S.
A guide to the French: Handle with care - International Herald Tribune
At Christmas, he and his team of butchers put on elves' hats with blinking lights. He is a playful spirit in a rather sober neighborhood — and the exception to the customer-is-always-wrong rule. He is so deeply trusted that when avian flu struck France, his poultry sales went up, not down. He offers passers-by free charcuterie and glasses of Beaujolais nouveau every fall. I'm convinced the practice was learned in the strict French educational system, in which teachers are allowed to tell pupils they are "zeros" in front of the entire class. In five and a half years living in Paris as an American correspondent, I have tried to make the country my own, knowing that I never will completely fit in, but always will be fascinated. In my time here, France has marked the 20th anniversary of France's sinking of Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior, the 200th anniversary of the high school baccalaureate diploma, the 60th anniversary of the bikini and the 100th anniversary of the brassiere. Instead, the trick is to somehow get the offended party to feel the mistake was his or her own. It has long been common practice for journalists in France to allow their interview subjects to edit their words. Mine, Monsieur Yvon, is more than a cutter of meat. One, Monsieur Yvon, in Paris, applies a personal touch that can be rare among French proprietors. Part of this feeling is a genuine affinity for the past, part a desire to cling to lost glory, part an insecurity that comes with a tepid economy and the struggle to integrate a growing Arab and African population. So as I finish my stint as Paris bureau chief and move on to a new beat here, it seems a good moment to offer eight lessons learned. So the official Élysée Palace transcript left out the line and replaced it with this: "I do not see what type of scenario can justify Iran's recourse to an atomic bomb." The practice of doctoring the transcript has continued under President Nicolas Sarkozy. When he tried to return it, the shopkeeper gave him the address of a tailor who can repair it — for a large fee.

According to several sites the flight to Varna (from Brussels or Cologne) was 500 euro!!! Air France flies from Paris to Sofia and costs 290 euro. All these
prices are the
prices you pay for departure from Brussels/Antwerp and Lige. Also, consider that Eurolines goes via Yugoslavia to Bulgaria. And that this diffusion of busstation has to do with the different directions busses are heading for. And they know that; so bet they let you pay! Another thing is that not all places are connected to the railway net. At the border between Bulgaria and Turkey; you will be summoned to get out of the bus and go to the cusumsoffice. Be aware of the fact that larger
cities often have more than one busstation. Both were in the summer-season about 130 euro. British Airways, flying from London to
sofia, is 250 pounds for a return-ticket. Bulgaria is in one zone together with Romenia and Yugoslavia and Macedonia. Busses are less comfortable and they dont have toilets on board. But if you are travelling around in other countries in the Balkan you can also buy a interrail pass. But its also a nice trip to hang all night around in the refreshment room with fellow backpackers in the same situation. Chas / zaminavane: means departure time. Finally; to get an idea of the costs: a ticket second class from Varna to

Fourth: many of the budget-airlines (like Ryanair, easeyjet, german wings) dont fly to Bulgaria. However it is only valuable for 2 weeks; so that if you want to stay moer weeks in Bulgaria, you also have to pay for a transit visa when you are returning; so that you pay 50 euro extra for the trip. I paid for a ticket from Sofia to Istanbul only 40 lv. If I am not wrong this visum costs 25 euro. If you are only travelling in Bulgaria, consider that Bulgarian trains are so cheap, that it does not pay back to buy a railpass for Bulgaria.
