Frommer’s travel guidebook series began in 1957 with the publication of Arthur Frommer’s book, Europe on $5 a Day. In the Valley of Kings, in tombs adorned with frescoes and bass reliefs, archaeologists continue to discover mankind’s most ancient gold treasures — the beautifully worked objects buried with Bulgaria’s Thracian forebears, some dating as far back as 3000 B.C. It was the first travel guide to show Americans that they can afford to travel in Europe. The book ranked popular landmarks and sights in order of importance and included suggestions on how to travel around Europe on a budget.

In the presence of the Bulgarian Minister of Culture Stefan Danailov and Minister-President of the Walloon Community Rudy Demotte, Mini-Europe revealed the Rila Monastery from Bulgaria. In the tenth century, he left his life at the monastery in Rouen to move to the barren Rila Mountains, and settled in the vicinity of the spectacular deep valleys of the Rilski River. It can be seen as the religious centre of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, and an expression of Bulgarian cultural identity. Since 1961, the Rila Monastery has been a national museum and in 1983, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.Like all the other monuments at Mini-Europe, the monastery is built to a scale of 1/25th. The irregular lozenge shape of the monastery is 5.90 m long and 5.20 m wide.More News... The monastery is also an example of the Bulgarian National Revival from the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The Orthodox religion forms the foundation of the Cyrillic alphabet, whose birthday is celebrated by Bulgarians every year on 24 May. The Rila Monastery is a perfect illustration of the Bulgarian spirit, since it has always been the cradle of the Bulgarian Orthodox tradition, particularly during the Ottoman occupation.

In October of 1941, Leon Tadzher carried out one of the first partisan acts anywhere in Bulgaria, by sabotaging German fuel depots in Ruse on the Danube. Includes a brief history and reading. It is known that Jewish partisans were active in Bulgariamostly young men and women and some adolescents, and in many cases, their contributions were substantial. Jewish partisan Violeta Iakova set off a campaign of assassinations with her execution of an extreme right wing General, which ended with the arrest, trial and execution of another Jewish partisan, Menahem Papo, whose assassination of a German agent was a national sensation. Others Jews killed in battle who were acknowledged for their heroic acts, were Mati Rubenov and Yosef Talvi. Read this study guide to learn about the role antisemitism played in and out of the partisan units and how it differed from region to region. About 16 years ago, when we crossed the border from Bulgaria into Greece, we were on a bus and it took a long time, as there were 2 "crossings", the Bulgarian and the Greek. But maybe that is not the rule, but more of an exception. As far as I know, there are no ID checks at arrival in any of the neignbouring countries. Hence, when crossing borders, remember to have your passport with you. However, now that they are both EU members it will be a breeze. However, this will rarely result in requests for bribes or similar harassment. I guess that again passports are piled and taken to the counters, it is quite unlikely that people have to disembark. In any case you will always be asked for ID when travelling from a non-Schengen country to a Schengen country or the other way around. In fact, I'm watching one called Incognito where an art thief on the run is dodging cops who are boarding the train he's riding on.It isn't a totally idle question. Normally you are not being asked for ID when travelling from one Schengen country to another. Of course, random police checks might occur, but chances are slight. As an American, you might be signled out if you are the only non-local traveler. Or when you get off at your destination. Post a Bulgaria travel question and get unbiased, timely answers and insights from real travelers and Bulgaria locals. Remember, even within Schengen and EU we are still talking crossing country borders (like US-Mexico) and not states like in the US. There are exceptions however, for example nowadays due to EURO 2008.

By the way-the price is much less that a similar service elsewhere in Europe. Great savings and special offers include discounts on Real Estate Agents fees, reduced cost car hire and much more. I am not working as a guide or a translator 8 hs a day 5 days a week and I am doing this in my free time. I enjoy meeting people from different countries, showing them around and helping in their new life here in Bulgaria as I am not Bulgarian as well and I know how hard it is to settle a new life here! I notice you are based in Guildford (in the fair county of Surrey, I presume). I will not have mentioned it but for the 'violin whining' comment, which reminded me that you should keep in mind that an hour of the service described, rendered for Surrey Police, is paid at 80 GPB an hour, which, in turn, renders 50 lev/hour positively competitive .... In fact, all Bulgarian public institutions pay an hour's interpretation at 100 BGN, unless one works at press conferences when the going (local BG rate) is 200 BGN. And big tournaments like this one usually deliver on their promise of good time, even if you do not have a ticket.Getting to Austria or Switzerland from Bulgaria is ridiculously easy these days. But as any fan will tell you, football is not just about what goes on the pitch, but the atmosphere off it as well. If you book your tickets early enough and carefully pick the dates on which you travel, you can get there using one of the many low-cost airlines for a similar amount, or just a touch more. In addition to the charter bus trips, organised by tourist agencies, bus companies travel the route regularly, with one-way tickets costing about 100 leva (180 leva for a round-trip). Neither of the two host countries are lacking in this department and are not expected to experience major shortages of rooms, even with tens of thousands of people descending on game night. Once there, getting around is just as easy and both the Austrian (http://oebb.at/euro2008/en) and Swiss (http://mct.sbb.ch/mct/en/euro08/euro08-fahrausweise.htm) railways offer discounts on tickets and passes for the duration of the tournament.Next step – accommodation. Security overall has been, understandably, beefed up. Some of these are just as impressive as the stadiums themselves – in Zurich, the area will be able to hold 45 000 and one of the three screens will be built to float over Lake Zurich, while in Innsbruck you will be able to watch the matches inside a ski-jumping arena.

In the first heat, defending World Champion, Andre Budzien (GER) continued to lead the scoreline, but tainted his copybook with a third place finish behind Thierry van Vierssen (NED) and Han Bergma (NED). In the second heat, Ilias Hatzipaulis (GRE) won in front of Gerko Visser (NED) and Eric Bakker (NED). Many have been training here for months in preparation for this regatta. On Thursday, the wind started at around 15 knots but soon dropped to about 10 knots once the starts got underway, and at times during the races dropped to 4-5 knots. The Dutch home fleet are having a great regatta with no less than 9 boats inside the top 20. The final race will be sailed tomorrow at 11.30, and although the winner is assured, everyone else in the top 10 is already discarding a high score, so the other medal places are wide open. The other heat was won by Mihail Kopanov (BUL) in a race plagued by large wind shifts and patchy holes across the course. Wednesday's race brought lighter winds with a few upsets, however after five races the discard had an equally large effect, bringing to the top many sailors who had picked up a high score in the first few races. Wide pressure differential across the course also caused a few upsets, but Budzien assured himself of his second consecutive title by placing second in his heat behind Hatzipaulis who won his second race in a row.
