According to this year's survey press freedom declines outnumbered advances by two to one in 2007, with declines seen in authoritarian countries and established democracies.The highest ranking countries in the world for 2007 are Finland and Iceland. Bulgaria also gets the third highest ranking in the region, topped only by Slovenia at 49th place (regarded as a "free" country) and Greece which is 57th. However, according to the report, the country’s reporters continue to face pressure and intimidation aimed at protecting economic, political, and criminal interests.The report goes on mentioning incidents when journalists were threatened or attacked. It assesses the degree of press freedom in every country in the world. Media outlets express a diverse range of public and political views, in most cases without government interference, Freedom House notes. Other countries in the region get poorer scores - Croatia at 79th, Montenegro at 83rd, Serbia at 87th, Romania at 96th, Bosnia and Herzegovina at 95th, Macedonia at 100th and Albania at 105th place.The Freedom House survey has been released annually since 1980.
