Bulgaria marks May 1 - News news


Bulgaria celebrated May 1 for the first time in 1890 under the initiative of a civil movement. In 1945 when the country was dominated by the Bulgarian Communist Party, May 1 was declared officially as a national holiday. In Sofia’s Borisova Gradina (Boris's Garden) will host a concert organized by the the ruling coalition's senior partner, the Bulgarian Socialist Party. In the next 45 years it was marked with mass demonstrations all around the country. In the year 1939 May 1 was declared a public holiday for the first time. Prime Minister and BSP leader Sergei Stansihev will attend the concert which starts at 10am. The day is also celebrated by the left-wing media in the country. The first major gatherings on the occasion started in Sofia, Plovdiv and Vidin in 1893.
