Each year the town hosts the May Festival of Culture, during which the town starts living a new, more dynamic and festive life, and which embraces a wide range of cultural events. However, the hub of all these is the International Biennial of Humour and Satire in the Arts, held under the motto: "The World Lasts Because It Laughs" as well as the many other events, organized by the one and only House of Humour and Satire in the world. In 2000, Gabrovo was integrated as member of the Foundation of European Carnival Cities, based in Holland and was personally visited by the foundation president Mr. It is the most popular and large-scale festivityevent for the Gabrovo people and their foreign guests. It was organized under the initiative of "Racho Stoyanov" Drama Theatre. It was revived in 1998 thanks to thekind assistance of the Delegation of the EU Commission to Bulgaria. The event is organized by the Gabrovo Orchestra and is the one and only jazz festival in Bulgaria featuring only one style - the traditional jazz. The festival adds on the to colourful palette of humour events with theatre art activities. The festivities culminate in the colourful carnival procession in thestreets of the town. The liveliness of its rhythm corresponds to Gabrovo humour. The plays, which had been staged during the event, spurred the significant interest of audience and testified that the town. The present dayCarnival has originated from the Gabrovo Oleliynya, embracing in itselfthe European influence of the masked balls of various guilds of1930ies, and has so far been interrupted only by the Second World Waryears and in the period 1990-1997. Thousands of foreign guests visit the town. Twoprojects have been developed in view to the holding of the carnival andthe carnival school for young Gabrovo people under the "Europe beforethe EC" project.
