As a guide, you can get asked about ANYTHING but I managed to pass the exams and was lucky enough to get a job with one of the countries' top tour operators. I decided to come back to Cape Town in 1990 one month after Nelson Mandela was released from prison, just to see what was happening but fell in love with this wonderful country and chose to stay. I have always enjoyed working with people and I wanted to see more of my country. I live in what I and many other people believe to be the most wonderful city in the world; Cape Town! I was also able to travel quite extensively and over the years have visited: France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Portugal, Sweden, Grease, Bulgaria, Rumania, Russia (actually the USSR when I was there) and Australia (where I spent 6 months). I was born here but grew up in London as my parents were involved in the political struggle against apartheid and escaped from the country when my father was about to be imprisoned for a long stretch due to his political activities. It can also be very frustrating as you generally have no say in what you do with the clients. It has been a wonderful experience and it is easily the best job I have ever had BUT it is very demanding. It was quite daunting at first as I was not educated here and had to learn about the history, geography, geology, flora, fauna....I can go on forever. Keep a look out as I think it will be useful._________________www.smallworldtours.co.zaBack to top ');//-->aaronAirport ManagerJoined: 09 Sep 2002Posts: 5923Location: Aardvarkland7876 antsPosted: Mon Mar 17, 2008 8:37 pm Post subject: Welcome aboard, Mike. Maybe I am biased because this is my home and I was forced to live outside the country for most of my life but I love the people here, the nature AND THE WEATHER!About 5 years ago I decided to become a tour guide. My record is 35 days straight without a break so you really have to choose between having a job you love and having a life. Of all the places I have visited though, nothing compares to South Africa. Particularly working for the company I worked for (and still do at times). The hours are UNBELIEVABLE and at certain times of the year you just can't do anything but work. You get an itinerary from an agent and no matter what; your job is to follow that itinerary. You're not the first Cape Town tour guide to join us!
