And learn to read the cyrillic characters. And what about going out at night alone in Sofia ?Thus, I don't really speak Bulgarian :) Some english, spanish and a little bit of german... Are there some easy public transportation from Sofia to reach the main touristic areas ? At the information booth in the Avtogarde (Inter-city bus station) the Information booth clerks do speak English, but the clerks that work at the sales counters do not. BUT - YES a good dictionary is a big help!!Most people in the tourist areas, restaurants and such do have some English, but usually it is limited to the job description, if you know what I mean.I used public transportation and had no problems. Do you think this might be very difficult to get understood ? From Rila you can eventually travel by bus to the vilages of Bansko and then to Melnik. Going out: go to the popular places where alos tourist and international travellers come and take eventually a taxi. If you buy a tram/bus ticket on the bus tram, rather than from the kiosk in advance it costs 0.10 lev more.I did find some French words more widely understood than the English word - lists and details on my Sofia page. If you take the earliest bus in the morning and the bus in the evning you can visit this place in a one day trip. In the east, you can reach by train or bus Koprivshitsa a beautifull museum town. Is that ok if I travel on my own (I mean a girl alone) ? My hosts live in Sofia, but they don't speak Bulgarian, and don't go out much.I was thinking about travelling on my own during the day to see the nice old villages around Sofia. Post a Bulgaria travel question and get unbiased, timely answers and insights from real travelers and Bulgaria locals. Rila and the Rila monastery is an absolute highlight, not to say the ultimate attraction of Bulgaria. The bus goes to them all, the train not. The drivers and the other passengers were all friendly and helpful. The people have a great sense of humor and most are more than willing to be helpful. They are usually friendly and willing to write down the hour of departure and the number of the departure platform if you ask them to do so.Buses are more convenient than trains. They go to more places and more frequently.
