Some of these hot springs lie at the ends of scenic treks, while others sit inside of ornate Turkish bath houses and still others have become the center of healing resorts. In fact, Bulgaria's natural spring water has been bottled and sold as a healing tonic throughout Eastern Europe. The Bulgarian mountains are filled with deep and quick-flowing rivers, crystal clear lakes, wild flowers, green meadows and stone monasteries. The highest Bulgarian mountain, Rila, stands nearly 3,000 miles tall and is home to over 2,000 varieties of plants. Rila is also home to the famous and mysterious Rila Monastary, built in the tenth century, this building not only has impressive architecture, but was the cause of many Bulgarian conflicts, and is a sort of cultural prize for the Bulgarian people. Bulgaria also borders the Danube, and the dramatic black sea. The Northern coast is characterized by fine sand beaches with shallow, calm water. Close to many beach resorts vacationers will find pine forests, natural hot springs, museums and national parks. Some of the better known resort destinations in the North include Albena, Riviera and Elena. In the Southern coast, you will find sand dunes, warm water and lovely bays with fascinating rock out-croppings. Some popular Southern coast resorts include Elenite, Nessebur and Sozopol.
