Everyone there was pretty friendly and most of the folks in the 20s and 30s I found spoke decent English so I will ask them. Get out to the gorges if you can!I don't care what anyone said either, buy yourself some of that seriously frenetic Bulgarian folk music. I didn't do anything sketchy or dangerous though.We took some marshrutkas down to the Rhodope mountains... I found Sofia completely uncharming on the whole when I was there but now, for some reason, I have nothing but nostalgic memories of the place. I think that will be just prior to the tourist rush and before it gets really hot.The more I look into it the more I like it ... I was there around Sept 06 and the weather was perfect, women lovely, and food excellent (never had a bad meal at all in Bulgaria). I'm sure if you ask around some folks will point you to a quality place. I'm sure there were men there to but I cannot remember them. Interesting watching illegal immigrants get kicked off the train.I stopped in Veliko Tarnovo, the medevil captial of Bulgara and packed with knokout women. It actually turned about to be convenient bc we blended in with the group and didn't have to pay an admission fee. It seems like all the girls had huge, watery, jiggly, and barely concealed breasts. Its a great, atmospheric place to visit, an old town overlooking a steep ravine down to the river. Nice cheap, bare bones mountain chalets to stay the night in over the different routes. Nothing grandiose, but extremely pleasant. Reasonably marked trails with some nice humble nature punctuated by crusty villages and bits and bobs of mechanical decay and of course, eternal construction (when you get closer to a town). Saw some REALLY cool contemporary art there. Stick with any Bulgarian restaurant outside of local fast food joints and you will eat cheaply and tastily! When I went with a friend to explore the castle ruins and there was a few organized tour groups going through.
